Understanding Nerve and Muscle Testing

What is a Nerve Conduction Study Used For?

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) are specialised tests used to assess nerve and muscle function. These tests help diagnose a range of peripheral nerve conditions, including:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Compression of the median nerve at the wrist, causing numbness, tingling, or pain in the hands.
  • Ulnar Nerve Entrapment – A trapped nerve at the elbow, leading to weakness or sensory changes in the hand.
  • Foot Drop – Dysfunction of the peroneal nerve near the knee, affecting foot movement.
  • Peripheral Neuropathy – Nerve damage, often associated with diabetes, leading to burning, tingling, or numbness in the feet.

Using advanced computer-assisted technology, these tests precisely measure nerve and muscle responses, providing essential insights for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

What Will I Feel During the Nerve Conduction Test?

During the test, a small electrical pulse is applied to the skin, which may cause a mild tapping or tingling sensation. If the test involves assessing muscle function, you may feel a slight muscle twitch.

Depending on your symptoms, testing may focus on:

  • Hands and arms – For conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or ulnar nerve entrapment.
  • Feet and legs – If experiencing tingling, burning sensations, or foot drop due to peripheral neuropathy.

This procedure has no lasting side effects, and you can resume normal activities immediately after.

How Long Does the Test Take & How Should I Prepare?

The test typically takes approximately 60 minutes. Results are discussed with you during the appointment and sent to your referring doctor by the evening.

To ensure accurate results, please follow these simple preparation steps:

  • Wear loose clothing to allow easy access to the test areas.
  • Remove rings and bracelets before the test.
  • Keep your hands and feet warm, as this helps improve the accuracy of the test.
  • Refrain from any lotions or perfumes on your skin
